The compatibilist claims that even if determinism is true, your actions could be free. To illustrate this, she might have us imagine that it was determined from the beginning of time that you would raise your arm right now. She might then point out that, even though this is true, had you wanted to do something else besides raise your arm, you could have. How does this example help explain why free will and determinism might be compatible?
