The fiction author Robert Drewe calls Australia a "veranda culture" because our highest population densities lie on the coast (particularly the eastern seaboard). Perhaps we are drawn to the ocean to contemplate? Tanya King uses the phrase "the contemplated ocean"; what does she mean by this? And how does this impact upon the use and conservation of marine environments?
