In his chapter "Clutter" William Zinsser defines clutter as "the laborious phrase that has pushed out the short word that means the same thing. In your experience as a college writer, why do you think writers choose to clutter up their writing with unnecessary words? Zinsser also mentions our urge to insert multiple prepositions in our writing. How does that change our writing's effectiveness?
