Social Controls: Like Germany and The United States during World War II, the government in the movie uses propaganda about the aliens to justify first moving (or "relocating") them into the District 9 ghetto and, later, to justify evicting them from District 9 and moving them to a new location far away from the humans. What attitudes, beliefs, and criticisms about the aliens does the government (and some of the citizens "interviewed" in the movie) use to justify segregating the aliens into the District 9 ghetto and later to evict them to relocate them once again? We eventually learn that the MNU weapons manufacturer and private military group are performing experiments on the aliens: Why are they doing this? How does this secret activity contradict their "official" message about the aliens that they communicate to the general population via propaganda? Social Coercion: The government and the MNU Corporation employ both non-violent and violent forms of social control against the aliens. Identify some non-violent forms of social control the government employs to manage the aliens. Next, discuss how these techniques affect the aliens' overall well-being and quality of life. Next, identify some violent forms of social control used by the government/MNU.
