In the 1968 Star Trek science fiction television series, teleportation was introduced to reduce the cost of producing a weekly show where a starship would need to land on the surface of a planet. The technology supposedly scans then deconstructs all of the character's atoms into an energy patter. The energy pattern is sent through a subspace domain to the target destination where the pattern is re materialized into atoms.
