Theoretical Background

Every day children who go to school learn valuable lessons and skills from their teachers as well as their peers. Although school is supposed to help children grow, these children are often faced with negative experiences, such as bullying, the effects of which could stay with children for the rest of their lives. Bullying has been around for generations and there are many different forms. Physical, verbal, indirect, social alienation, intimidation and cyberbullying are all apart of bullying and can affect any child at any age. Some children bully others as a way of overcoming their own insecurities after being bullied themselves. Some children will stop performing well academically as an attempt to control their situation. Other children will shut down and shut themselves away from their peers, parents and other loved ones because the bullying has made them feel isolated from everyone around them. Children should be taught by parents, teacher and guidance counselors how to cope with their emotions that have surfaced due to bullying.
