How does one explain the evidence of convergent evolution

1. Is evolution random? If evolution is random, then how does one explain the evidence of "convergent evolution"-very different organisms such as fish and ichthyosaurs and dolphins arriving at the same solution to swimming fast in water? If evolution is directed, then if you could rewind the movie of life on earth and play it again, would it always come out the same? Limit your entire answer to three sentences.

2. From a cell's point of view, what is the purpose of a cell, and what is the purpose of a gene? From a gene's point of view (according to Dawkins), what is the purpose of a cell and what is the purpose of a gene?
