Problem
Although the story of Sunjata originates in West Africa, it bears some resemblance in form to popular myths from other cultures. Think carefully about similarities and differences between Sunjata and other stories we've read so far, then consider the following:
A. How does magic factor into the story of Sunjata? Does it perform a similar role in other works? If so, which ones? And how are they similar?
B. The buffalo is a central figure in Sunjata. Does this antagonist remind you of other characters or creatures from the other stories?
C. Unusual weaponry and tools help the protagonists in Sunjata overcome their obstacles. What other heroes from the stories we've read use unique items or methods to accomplish their goals? Why do you think this is such a common trope for storytellers?
D. Do you think there is a big difference between witnessing a performance of a story like Sunjata and reading it in translation? Why?
