Understanding customers is critical to marketing. Providing products customer's want, desire, and need, requires knowing how the customer thinks and behaves. Knowing customers allows a company to provide good customer care and delivery on what is promised.  Knowing customers allows a company to anticipate their needs and exceed expectations.   You can get to know your potential customers in multiple ways, you may put yourself in their shoes (includes owner assumptions), you can ask them what they think, (takes a while and you must reach most of them to really know), or you can collect and analyze data. (or purchase data)

Understanding customers is critical to marketing. VALS strengthens demographic characterizations by explaining the deeper psychological drivers of consumer behavior.
