You've read excerpts from the epic poem Gilgamesh and learned about how this provided a glimpse into Anglo-Saxon society. The important aspects of their culture are major themes throughout the epic. We can use this same method of textual analysis to learn more about other cultures. After reading from the Beowulf epic, you will work to identify important characteristics found in the epic and compare it to Gilgamesh.
Analyze the epic of Gilgamesh to determine the cultural significance of the plot, characters, ending, etc. Then, compare this to Beowulf and the Anglo-Saxon culture. Type using complete sentences (3-5 per question if possible). When necessary, provide a line number to cite any textual evidence.
a) How does Gilgamesh compare to Beowulf as an epic hero? In what ways are they similar? In what ways are they different?
b) How does the addition of the character Enkidu change the story compared to Beowulf? Did Beowulf have a comparable character to Enkidu? Why might this be the case?
c) Based on this excerpt from the epic of Gilgamesh, what was likely important to the people of Mesopotamia? Support your opinion with evidence from the story (provide a line number to cite your evidence).

How is this different from Anglo-Saxon culture as reflected in Beowulf? What are the major differences or similarities you noticed?
