Possible Questions
One of the questions below will appear on the exam. You should be prepared to answer any of the three. Important Reminder: You must incorporate material from the lectures and readings in all of the answers.
1. Choose three case studies that illustrate the ways that global historical events and processes have had an impact on the Modern Middle East. You must include at least one example from the lectures and one from the Gelvin text.
2. Select two primary sources from different sections of the Gelvin book. Analyze the sources using the questions from the Primary Source Worksheet. How does each text reflect the broader themes of Gelvin's book? To phrase it a different way: why did the author choose these texts to include as examples?
3. Choose two individuals, groups or institutions (for example: Madam Chiang, Bernal Díaz del Castillo, Olaudah Equiano, Boxers United in Righteousness, the Harem) that have featured in the course materials and explain how they represent broader course themes such as cross cultural exchange, Orientalism or the methods and techniques of historical study. Be sure that your choices come from two different course modules.
