Overview - This week we have spent time learning about our digestive system and our nutritional needs. The goal of this exercise is for you to determine how many calories you burn and how much energy your body needs every day. By doing this, you can better understand how many calories it takes for your body to function normally and why it is important to maintain a healthy level of activity and caloric intake. You will then take this information and compare it to another organism, a cow, to think about how our calorie requirements differ and why.

First your nutritional needs:

STEP 1: Go to Nutritional Needs Calculator.

Click on the "Calories Needed & BMR".

Calculate your calories needed and record it.

Now switch to the basal metabolic rate button and calculate that. Record it for later.

STEP 2: Click on the "Nutritional Needs" tab.

Enter your calories and then record your estimated needs for carbs, proteins, and fats.

Now a cow's nutritional needs:

As a primary consumer, a dairy cow has very specific nutritional requirements that must be adhered to so that the health of the cow is maintained while producing the highest quality milk for the farmer. The following are the accepted dietary requirements of a 1400-pound mature lactating cow producing 50 pounds of 3.5% fat milk daily.

Daily Caloric Requirement: 25,600 calories.

Daily Calcium Requirement: 0.207 pounds (93.9 grams).

Daily Protein Requirement: 1.37 pounds (621 grams).

Questions:

Question 1: Think about the food molecules or macromolecules you consumed. Where are each these molecules being digested? Where are they being absorbed? And finally, for each of these three molecules, what is the final fate of these molecules in the body (i.e. what is that molecule used for in the body?)

Question 3:  How do your digestive system and the digestive system of a cow differ?

Question 4: How do your nutritional requirements compare to a dairy cow? What is different between the lifestyle of you and a cow that might cause these differences (don't just talk about weight or lactation or that you are not a cow!)? Think about the calories required per pound.
