a) Select just one of Countee Cullen's poems to examine in detail and offer an interpretation of it. How do you understand the poem? What do you believe the poet is trying to say with it? And why do you believe so? Explain.
b) Discuss Cullen's potery in relation to the ideas presented in Langston Hughes's essay "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain." Do you believe that the Cullen's work fulfills the expectations Hughes has for the black artist and what he calls "racial art"? Why or why not? Be sure to explain your thinking and be specific.
