Read the short story "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" by Ursula Le Guin. Clearly Le Guin is creating a fictional world through this story, positing a society that doesn't exist. Or is she? What correlation does the fictional society of Omelas have to real life? What seems to be the object of Le Guin's satire? Often the point of futuristic fiction is to help us to scrutinize our own society as it exists more closely and critically. What does Le Guin seem to be suggesting about real life society by presenting us with the disturbing depiction of Omelas?
How do you interpret the ending of the story with the reference to "the one who walk away from the Omelas"? Who might these people who walk away represent? Where do they seem to go?
