How do women in ancient times compare to women today

Problem

Compare women in ancient times to women today. In other words, were women in the past generally discriminated against, treated unequally, or not, and is there less sexism and discrimination against women now, or is modern sexism just different in its form (i.e. lower wages, few high-level corporate and government positions, control of sexuality, etc.)? Consider areas such as the law, education, politics, sexuality, gender roles, etc.

To answer this question, first analyze women historically (from the beginnings of civilization (i.e. Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, etc.) through Japan and Korea (chapter 12); in other words, the time period of this course; do not include the hunter-gather period). Then, compare that analysis to women now. How do women in ancient times compare to women today (in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries)?
