How do the three largest Latino groups vary in racial identity? What was the discrepancy between the self-identity of Puerto Ricans and others' perception of them? In the United States, Latinos tend to avoid taking on the label of being "White" or "Black," although lighter-skinned Hispanics generally distinguish themselves from Black Americans. Yet in a 2014 national survey, about one-quarter of U.S. Hispanics considered themselves "Afro Latino, Afro-Caribbean, or Afro-country of origin." This self-description does not automatically mean they identify themselves as "Black" but rather that they can report themselves as a combination of White, Hispanic, mixed, tribal, or Black.
