The War of 1812 marked a transition in the relationship between Indigenous peoples on Turtle Island and settler Canadians. What did this transition look like? How did this play out in the land that eventually became Toronto? What did this mean for the relationship between settlers and Indigenous peoples?
Though many of Toronto's earliest communications, transportation and electrical systems were created by private entrepreneurs, they were generally amalgamated and taken over by the City of Toronto in the early 20th century. Discuss this process, referring specifically to Toronto Hydro and the TTC. Would Toronto have developed in the same way, or grown as quickly as it did, if these systems had remained privately owned? Was this an important part of Toronto's early development?
