Discussion Post: WORLD MARKETS AND ATLANTIC REVOLUTIONS, 1345-1888
Details: In 300 to 500 words develop a written argument and historical explanation for any of the following essential questions found in your course notes for weeks 1-2. In order to receive full credit for the assignment, the answer in your essay should include at least one example from each of the following sources:
a) An example from our in-class lectures and discussions. (This can be a video link shared in class or a topic explained by the instructor.)
b) An example from your assigned readings (in parenthesis list the text author and page number).
c) A topic or term covered in your course notes or embedded powerpoint links, supplemented by your own independent research. (If using an outside resource make sure to list all of your references at the bottom of your submission).
d) An open-ended question that speculates at an alternative historical outcome, had the featured event or individual turned out or acted differently.
Students are welcome to choose any of the following questions to answer and explain:
• How did the spread of the Black Death across Eurasia in the mid-14th Century permanently restructure European life and society? What positives emerged as a result of the elimination of ½ to 2/3 of the population of Continental Europe?
• In your opinion who were the most important leaders in the development of Western Culture? Use examples from the Florentine Renaissance, Enlightenment, or the American and French Revolutions.
• How did the arrival of gunpowder and print in Europe during the 1450s fundamentally change European life and society for all time? How does this influence the Age of Exploration and religious upheavals of the 16th and 17th centuries?
• How did the American Revolution inspire other global revolts during the late 18th and early 19th century? Compare and contrast the outcome of the American Revolution with those in France, Haiti, etc.
• Describe and examine the social structures and dynamics that existed within the plantation economy. What were the conditions that helped to bring about the end of slavery during the 19th Century?
The response must include a reference list. Using one-inch margins, double-space, Times New Roman 12 pnt font and APA style of writing and citations.
