1. This is about the film "up in the air" 2009. Please answer as many questions as possible. Try and use misc-en-scene also. A meaty paragraph should be enough.
2. How did the major actors (playing Ryan and Natalie) use "staging" to create their respective characters? What did the mannerisms/movement/actions/voice add up to..how would you describe the person he/she generated? How did the character changes get expressed through staging?
3. What role did costumes and makeup play in establishing character personalities and character development? What were some important moments for costumes, and what did the clothing/hair connote?
4. How did the decor and setting create meaning in the film? Did it change throughout the film? If so, how and with what effect? What different spaces can you compare, and what meaning is generated from each one? What props (elements of the decor) were the most meaningful in relation to specific characters and why?
5. TOUGHER ONE: SETTING --> The title of the film references space, and a good amount of the film takes place in transitory spaces such as airports, airplanes, hotels, etc. What set of meanings do those spaces give to the characters, particularly Ryan? What is the connection between the spaces he occupies and the work that he does (which is clearly expressed as deplorable or at least heartless from the beginning of the movie)? Think symbolically here -- not just literally.
