Assignment: The Beatles Essay
Write an essay on one of the topics below (Word doc &docx formats only), give it a title, double-space the text, and make sure you stick to the word limit of 1200 words. This limit does not include the title and bibliography, but it does include quotations. Append a bibliography on a separate page.
1. Choose two original songs that you feel best account for the early success of The Beatles. Explain why.
2. Ringo Starr was the vital ingredient The Beatles needed to complete both their musical and public image. Discuss.
3. Assess the impact of Beatlemania. Discuss both positive and negative consequences.
4. Discuss the choice of two cover songs on the band's early albums (up to and including Help!), and show how they may have contributed to the development of a distinctive Beatles style.
5. How did The Beatles "conquer" America? Give both social and musical reasons.
6. In what ways did the movies A Hard Day's Night and Help! reflect the lives and personalities of The Beatles?
Some general advice: This is a short essay, and thus I am asking for quality rather than quantity of data. You are encouraged to read widely and think carefully to develop your own opinion, which should then be expressed with succinct reference to other authors (with whom you may agree or disagree). I am often asked how many sources is enough, and the answer is as many as it takes to make a persuasive point. Therefore, obviously, the more you read about your chosen topic, the better. (But please don't cite dozens of redundant sources when a half dozen will do!) Note too that I encourage clarity and eloquence in writing. Your grade will be judged on your idea and its argument, your research, and the quality of your writing.
