For former slaves, the victory of the Union in the Civil War brought about great hope. But change would not be quick as the country fought to put the pieces back together during a period known as "Reconstruction." And though slavery had ended, a new kind of racism would take its place.
How did African Americans respond to their new freedom after the war? What challenges did they face? How did President Johnson's plan for Reconstruction differ from Congressional Reconstruction? How did white Southerners resist Reconstruction and the end of slavery?
