Problem: Culture and spirituality play an important role in shaping social thinking because they influence how people interpret situations, evaluate behavior, and interact with others. Social cognition is the process by which people perceive, interpret, and remember information about themselves and others (Heinzen & Goodfriend, 2022). These perceptions are not formed in isolation. Instead, they are shaped by cultural values, beliefs, and life experiences. One important distinction is between individualistic and collectivist cultures. Individualistic cultures, such as the United States, often emphasize personal achievement, independence, and individual responsibility. In contrast, collectivist cultures place greater value on family, community, and maintaining harmony within the group (Heinzen & Goodfriend, 2022). These differences influence not only how people see themselves but also how they explain the actions of others. As someone who is Latina, I find that my cultural identity naturally encourages me to value family relationships, loyalty, and supporting others. Although I grew up in the United States, my family's Mexican heritage taught me the importance of putting family first and respecting those around me. At the same time, serving in the Army has reinforced the value of teamwork and accountability, where success depends on trusting and supporting the people around you.
