Social or Cultural customs that affect the workplace can range from specific holidays or local festivities to workplace rituals such as extended lunch breaks or alternative schedules based on climate or culture.

As the UAE is a cultural driven country it highly reflects on the workplace. A prime example is the holy month of Ramadan. Working hours are shorter for Muslims and those of other religions as it is a time to spend time with your family and seek spiritual fulfillment.

The UAE has taken steps to align their work week to the rest of the world two years ago making Saturday and Sunday the weekend oppose to Friday and Saturday however as it is a primarily Muslim community it allows everyone to attend the Friday prayer at noon and workplaces have to cater to these customs.

Overall UAE wants to ensure that it caters to different cultures and yet follows the customs of Islam and local culture.

Workplace practices or conditions that may affect your peers work in other countries may include differences in labor laws (i.e.: maternity/paternity leave or anti-discrimination laws) to the effects of country or city infrastructure in the daily workplace (i.e.: commute time, questions during a work interview that can take place in one country vs. another).

There are heavy discrimination laws in UAE and recently UAE has been emphasizing this to the private sector. That has been issues of workplaces not wanting to employ females with a headscarf for customer facing jobs due to stereotypes, but a few steps have been taken to tackle this from the government with a soft approach such as including covered ladies into government advertisement, employing them on government positions.

The UAE sets quite a dynamic pace and because it is an ultra-capitalist system it needs to improve on life-work balance and have some kind of system to implement this and promote with private companies as the government sector does not suffer from this so much.
