Cultural Immersion Proposal
For this cultural immersion project, I chose to research the Indigenous/Native American community, specifically American Indian and Alaska Native populations. I selected this group because I want to better understand the historical trauma, cultural values, and mental health barriers Indigenous communities face. As someone interested in the counseling/helping profession, I believe it is important to learn how culture and history affect wellness and communication.
I also chose this group because, before this course, I realized most of my knowledge came from stereotypes, media, or limited information taught in school. One bias I may have is assuming Indigenous communities all share the same beliefs and traditions, when in reality every tribe and community is different. I also want to better understand how historical loss and discrimination still impact Indigenous families today.
Through this research and immersion experience, I hope to become more culturally aware and learn how to provide more respectful and effective support to people from Indigenous communities.
