How covid pandemic has taken a toll on staffing

Problem:

Let's Pretend Jane is the chief nursing officer (CNO) at a large hospital in Texas. Jane has been in the CNO role for 15 years. During her tenure, Jane has experienced many rewards as well as challenges in her leader role. The COVID pandemic has taken a toll on staffing at Jane's hospital. She has supplemented staff with travel nurses but still has many unfilled positions, especially in management. Jane has worked closely with other leaders in nursing and administration to solve the staffing issues. A nearby university just graduated a class of 50 new baccalaureate nurses, and Jane knows that 10 nurses recently received MSNs at the same university. Jane has no issues with hiring any of the MSN nurses to fill leader/manager roles, but is hesitant to use new graduates in these roles. However, Jane is averaging losing two nurses a month due to burnout. Many of these are nurses in manager roles. A decision is made by leadership to hire 2 new graduate nurses to assume leader/manager roles (remember, we are pretending) on the medical and surgical units. Scenario Jane is the chief nursing officer (CNO) at a large hospital in Texas. Jane has been in the CNO
