How counselors address spirituality in the session

Problem:

In the past, counselors did not always address spirituality in the session; however, today we recognize that spirituality can be intertwined with culture. We also recognize that this link to spirituality can also provide support for the client because we realize that spirituality and religion are critical sources of strength for many clients. They can be the bedrock for finding meaning in life, and can be instrumental in promoting healing and well-being. Of importance, however, is that it is not the role of the counselor to prescribe any particular pathway. Instead, counselors can make use of the spiritual and religious beliefs of their clients to help them explore and resolve their problems.

When a client identifies that they are not religious, but instead they consider themselves to be spiritual, what does that mean to you? And how do you proceed in the counseling session?
