How counseling process and mental health are influenced

Problem: The counseling process and mental health are influenced by a variety of factors, including health ignorance, learned beliefs, socioeconomic status, educational attainment, and personal experiences. In addition to creating practical barriers to treatment, a low socioeconomic status may worsen chronic stressors including housing, food insecurity, and employment, which often shows up as anxiety or depression. While past trauma, discrimination, or seasonal pressures might create fundamental ideas about security, confidence, and worth that influence the therapeutic relationship, lower health literacy may make it more difficult to understand psychoeducation. CBT allows clinicians to provide skill-based, culturally sensitive therapy, including feedback and simple therapy, behavioral stimulation, problem-solving around visible stressors, trauma-informed pace and value-based goals that respect cultural and familial settings. Connecting background to feelings/sensations, ideas, behaviors, and family/cultural systems allows case formulations to be modified. For instance, a first-generation student may exhibit avoidance; an immigrant adult may exhibit isolation while; a trauma survivor may exhibit abandonment beliefs; or a financially stressed parent may exhibit withdrawal and anxiety.
