How could worker encourage sophie to make informed choice

Problem

Sophie is a 22-year-old TAFE student who has been engaging in at-risk behaviour; going out with friends who drink and drive and are involved in incidents of petty theft. Sophie admits to hating her life and indulging in risky behaviour to feel part of a group and to get a rush from the associated danger.

Sophie has recently been before the court on criminal charges (she and a friend were caught shoplifting) and has been let off with a good behaviour bond. She does not have strong family support and believes that it is totally up to her to manage her life. Consequently, she feels rather lost.

A youth services worker was assigned to support Sophie during the court case and formed a collaborative and empathetic relationship with her.

i. How could the worker encourage Sophie to make informed choice about help that will deal with her current crisis and her need for ongoing support?

ii. How might the input of the current helping relationship provide foundations for further care?
