Contrast of Message Paper: Imagine that both John Steinbeck and Anton Chekhov are special guests on an episode of "The View," where they are discussing how to deal with issues of the heart and love. Once they tell the audience their stance on the subject by summarizing their views based on their stories, they take questions from the audience. It is here where a man tells both authors that he is unhappy with his marriage and feels lost. He says he loves his wife, but feels as if there's nothing he can do to stop the heartache. Considering the actions of the characters as well as the tone and symbolism in "The Chrysanthemums" and "The Lady With the Pet Dog," what advice can they lend? Using quotes from the text to support your ideas, first discuss each authors' feelings on love. Are they similar, different? How could they help this man solve his problems?
