Problem: Cognitive dissonance is the mental discomfort a person experiences when they hold two conflicting beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors at the same time. According to social psychology, people are motivated to reduce this discomfort by changing either their beliefs, attitudes, or actions so they are more consistent. This process helps restore a sense of internal balance. One example of cognitive dissonance in my life occurred when I accepted the position of Club Director for the Boys & Girls Club after working for the school district for many years. For a long time, I believed that staying with the school district provided stability and security. However, I had also earned a degree in Human Resource Management and wanted to pursue leadership opportunities that aligned with my education and long-term career goals. These two beliefs conflicted with one another. I wanted the security of my current position, but I also wanted to grow professionally and make a greater impact as a leader. The discomfort I experienced caused me to evaluate what was most important for my future. My attitude changed from believing that remaining in the same position was the safest option to believing that taking calculated risks is necessary for personal and professional growth. The driving factors behind this cognitive dissonance included my desire to use my education, advance my career, increase my leadership responsibilities, and create a positive impact on children, families, and the community through.
