Problem: Respond to this one. The study I chose discusses how climate change temperatures can be expected to alter the postmortem interval (PMI) in forensic investigations. The research methods used to determine the results were completed through mixed research methods. The qualitive side of this research was done through understanding of how postmortem interval has worked under the expected and historically normal temperatures. Research determined that temperature is the most important factor in determining decomposition rates because temperature itself increases decomposition rates and also results in higher numbers of carrion insects. After understanding how temperature impacts decomposition, researchers developed the total body score equation that attaches points to each area of the body based on a visual assessment and then divides the PMI with the average temperature during decomposition. This allows for a more accurate PMI window to be determined and is currently the most widely used formula, however, this method needs to be changed depending on additional circumstances surrounding the decomposition process and is not entirely accurate in cooler and drier regions. Researchers are currently working on developing a more accurate equation that can be used as temperatures and climates become increasingly extreme as the data for the body score equation is based on the climate and temperatures of Tennessee.
