How climate change impacts on disaster preparedness

Problem:

Climate change has significant impacts on disaster preparedness by increasing the occurrence of severe storm events, heavy rainfall events, and excessive heat. One of the largest concerns about climate change within my community is flooding, as there have been more frequent occurrences of intense storms and increased amounts of rainfall. As a result of this, climate change will continue to enhance the frequency and severity of the aforementioned weather-related events, placing homes, hospitals, roads, and communities at increased risk. These natural disasters can lead to disruptions in the delivery of healthcare services, displace families from their homes, and further exacerbate the incidence of waterborne illnesses (Falkner, 2022). Flooding creates many health and safety risks for individuals. Exposure to contaminated water results in gastrointestinal illness and skin infection. Molds that develop due to standing floodwaters create respiratory issues when exposed to asthmatic and other respiratory conditions. Additionally, power outages can prevent oxygen-dependent patients from receiving medical treatment, limit the ability for patients with dialysis to receive medical treatment, and damage refrigeration units used to store insulin and other prescription medications. Lastly, there is an increased risk of physical injuries, including drownings, falls, and psychological disorders such as anxiety and stress, resulting from loss of home and/or personal property.
