For this discussion, I will focus on an individual familiar to me who has been living with Type 2 Diabetes. This person struggled with stress, unhealthy habits, and emotional challenges that contributed to both the development and progression of the illness. Psychology is closely connected to chronic illness because emotional and behavioral factors often influence health outcomes. In the case of Type 2 diabetes, several psychological and lifestyle factors may contribute to its development. The individual experienced ongoing stress from work responsibilities and financial pressures. Chronic stress can negatively affect health because it increases stress hormones and can encourage unhealthy coping behaviors such as overeating, poor sleep habits, and reduced physical activity. Psychological stress can also affect motivation and decision-making regarding health behaviors. According to Taylor (2022), stress and behavior patterns are important contributors to the development and progression of chronic illnesses.
