How can a social relationship be considered a control?

A social relationship can be considered a control when it is used to control one of the parties involved in a relationship. According to social control theory, commitments, value and relationships are likely to encourage conformity in any group. The internal control of an individual can push them to accept or reject the notion. Relationships can be used to control certain events in an organization or any group setting.

Social relationships can be used as control by influencing factors like commitment, value, relationship, and ego and so forth. People will decide to undertake an individual activity based on internal influence, which might be caused by ego, commitment or relationships. The four know types of social control are punishment, internal, indirect and satisfaction. For example, in an organization an employee can be controlled by threatening to take away a number of privileges upon disobedience. It is the one of the means of social control, which is under punishment.

Social relationship can be used as a control by influencing people to undertake or refrain from a certain activity. For example, one might decide to avoid drugs because it will cause pain to the people who have close relationships with him/her. In this case, the social relationship will indirectly control the act of this particular individual.
