How body image-sexual self-esteem factors in sexual interest

Problem:

Body image and sexual self-esteem are major factors in sexual interest and activity in older adulthood, particularly for women. Physical health and Psychological factors both impact the sexual decision-making in late adult clients. Physical health-As individuals age, they may experience a decline in physical health, which can impact sexual activity. Psychological Factors-Mental health issues like depression or anxiety can also affect sexual desire. Some older adults don't feel comfortable in their aging bodies. They may worry that their partner will no longer find them attractive. Health conditions can cause physical problems, along with stress and worry, that can get in the way of intimacy or enjoying a fulfilling sex life. According to the literature, older women with psychiatric symptoms and poor psychological status had lower libido. Simultaneously, depression can also cause sexual function problems. Yu et al. found that anxious older adults had significantly lower sexual life quality than non-anxious older adults.
