This process is called secondary deviance, where the individual continues committing crimes as a result of how they are treated by society. For example, if someone believes that others see them as a criminal and will not accept them, they may feel there is no reason to change their behavior. Another important drawback is that labeling can limit access to legitimate opportunities. Once someone has a criminal record, they may have difficulty finding a job, connoting their education, or building positive relationships. The labeling process can also weaken ties to family and law abiding peers, which are important for preventing crime.
