Truthfully, this is one of those things that are passed down from the way we were raised. Many values and ethics were taught to us growing up. In contrast, not everyone grew up in the best situations. Some officers may have learned values and ethics from other officers they've worked with or looked up to throughout their career. As we get older, some of our values change, and we learn to see the world from different points of view. In contrast, at one time I was far conservative, as I get older I find myself more of a moderate where I can see things from both points of view on specific scenarios. Across the country, police officers work daily to uphold the law, often facing complex situations that challenge their ethics and judgment. While traditional training equips officers with technical skills and procedural knowledge, it can sometimes overlook the ethical depth needed for truly impactful police work (Panning, 2025). One thing that comes into play with this and officers is that an officer may find themselves morally a good person; however, their morals may not align with the morals of the person that they're arresting, potentially causing a clash or issues within their process of handling certain situations with individuals. My biggest problem with the standard of how police forces train their officers is that they do a lot of learning from their peers, when in reality, many of us are a product of our environment. How we are taught, if one is put with a bad cop, it could harm them, making a positive impact on the community. (Which is why most people join the police force to begin with.)
