How are the roles and functions of information governance

How are the roles and functions of information governance changing, or likely to change, in the face of the BYOD, Big Data and Cloud revolutionary movements?

Granted, the details of how you do the fine-grain control and implementation of various governance strategies is constantly evolving as the underlying technologies change. But let's jump about two levels above that, and consider things at the broader "why" and "what" level first, before thinking about "how."

On the one hand, it can be argued that the overall roles and functions of data governance are not really changing, despite these Revolutions, and despite whether you consider that the "stuff to be governed" are data, information, ideas, processes or the behaviors of people in the organizations themselves.

On the other hand, it can also be argued that if an organization accepts the "idea" hypothesis, and sees this focus of information-in-action as the powerfully transformative effect it can be, then a lot of the ways that various governance processes fit together have to be transformed.

One could also argue that "it depends" on such things as organizational size and complexity, mission and objectives, or a variety of other factors.

Take sides on this issue, or find a position in between them; do some additional inquiry as you need to, to support your position.
