How are immigrants represented

Assignment task:

Your task is to use photographs or other visuals as a jumping-off point to think more deeply (and/or to encourage others to think more fully) about the complexities related to immigration. Conduct an internet image search to find three photographs and/or other visual images that express political points of view, ideas, or concerns about immigration and/or immigrants that are opposite or different from the ones in the photo above.

For each of the three photos you select, please answer the following (2-3 sentences):

1. What/whose concerns are represented? How can you tell?

2. How are immigrants represented? Do you get a sense from the visual of particular immigrant groups (national or ethnic origins, women, children, etc)? Are there any messages or images that are simultaneously racialized and gendered? Or simultaneously racialized and classed? Are the experiences of any particular subgroups of immigrants highlighted?

3. Can you identify any representations that are similar to past historical representations of immigrants discussed in class?

4. How do the ideas or messages highlighted in the photograph contrast with, support/add, or complicate the messages in the photo above?
