How alcohol changes the mental state of a person

Problem: One of the behaviors in the power and control wheel is minimizing, denying, and blaming which is when the batterer tries to make light of their abuse by saying either it did not happen or shifting the responsibility of their behavior onto the victim (NCDSV, n.d.).This behavior could be exaggerated when alcohol is added to the mix because alcohol changes the mental state of a person who is not abusive or aggressive, but for someone who is, it will just intensify those behaviors. Many batterers will use alcohol as an excuse for their violence and/or behavior to mitigate their responsibility to the event (Korsmeyer & Kranzler, 2009).A batterer will try and lessen their behavior and punishments of abuse by blaming the alcohol for their actions, stating they would not have reacted the way they did if they did not have alcohol in their system, or will blame the victim by saying they should not have made them angry or did what they did to cause the abuse, while they were drinking.
