Advocacy is one of the most important responsibilities of a social worker because it helps people get the support and resources they need while also working to improve the systems that affect their lives. The NASW Code of Ethics explains that social workers have a responsibility to stand up for people who may not have a voice and to promote fairness and equal opportunities for everyone (National Association of Social Workers [NASW], 2021). Advocacy is something social workers do every day to help make a difference in people's lives.
Advocacy is especially important when working with victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). Many survivors face challenges that make it difficult to leave an abusive relationship, including financial concerns, fear of losing their children, or worrying that the abuse will get worse if they leave (Sokoloff & Dupont, 2005). Cultural beliefs and past experiences can also affect whether someone feels comfortable asking for help. Social workers can advocate by helping clients find safe housing, connect with counseling and community resources, access legal services, and create a safety plan.
