Colonial Latin America
Choose one question and write a response in 3-pages, double-spaced, with one inch margins:
1. Were the native peoples of Spanish America subject to forced labor? Draw on the material in Colonial Latin America, and also the PowerPoint lectures, that provides a survey of the different forms of Indian labor that are historically significant, including encomienda, mita, yanaconaje, and repartimiento?
2. Discuss the origins of the Atlantic African slave trade, and identify the factors that contributed to an expansion of the trade over the course of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Be specific.
3. Discuss and evaluate the roles of women in the colonial economy of seventeenth century Spanish America. Be specific; consider ethnicity and race, and both urban and rural economies.
