Anoximander (600 B.C.) was the first western philospher who proposed the idea that "living creatures arose from the moist element".

Hartsoeker - He was spermist. He compared the sperm with seeds and egg compared with soil. Seeds get nutrition from soil and grwo. Eggs provide the nutrition to embryo.
