Here is a practice problem to solve for hypothesis testing

Here is a practice problem to solve for hypothesis testing. Refer to the handout posted in Files for additional information about the steps in hypothesis testing.

A medical researcher says that less than 24% of adults in a certain country are smokers. In a random sample of 250 adults from that country, 18.8% say that they are smokers. At α = 0.05, is there enough evidence to support the researcher's claim?

Perform a hypothesis test using the following 5 steps. You may also choose to elaborate on a classmate's response.

1) State the null and alternative hypotheses. Identify which statement is the claim.

2) Determine the value of the standardized test statistic, z. (Round to 2 decimal places as needed.)

3) Find the P-value. (Round to 3 decimal places as needed.)

4) Decide whether to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis.

5) Interpret the decision in the context of the original claim.
