Helmert contrast is the contrast often used in analysis of the variance, in which each level of a factor is tested against average of the remaining levels. So, for instance, if three groups are involved of which the ?rst is a control, and the another two healing groups, the ?rst contrast tests control group against the average of the two treatments and the second tests whether the two treatments differ or not.
