Topic: Cartoons & race: hegemony and the normalization of racial types
This assignment seeks to get you watching/monitoring popular culture (TV, movies, news, websites, commercials, and so on) and to think about where/when/how course ideas might come up in popular culture. Read a news story that has to do with race, racism, and popular culture? Watch a movie recently and you're interested in unpacking the representations and images it features? Twitter arguments? Buzzfeed? Tumblr? TikTok? Viral videos? Commercials? Songs/singles/music videos?
Posting should contain: 6 (i) a link: to a website, news story, film/video/music clip, etc. - something that can show us or tell us about the item/event/issue you're talking about (ii) a comment and/or description that says something briefly about how and why this relates to the issues of the Topic that it is posted under (this should be no more than a few lines, up to one paragraph) (3) ONE question about the item/issue that you can direct to the class group that they're able to respond/reply to.
