Health Promotion Planning & Evaluation

Based on your classmate discussion, determine if s/he might be considered by the community as an ally to or a member of the community group.

Analyze the implications for the difference in these roles as your classmate works with the community.

Discuss how well you believe your classmate addressed all of the potential issues that might arise as s/he attempts to gain access to the community.

Recommend at least one additional strategy for how your classmate could effectively gain entrance into and the trust of the community. Leon The Green Ghetto is the group I intend to focus on to gain trust in the local community of one of the boroughs in New York City. I'm similar to this community because of the connection with the city and the communities.

I'm originally from New York City and was raised in one of the five boroughs as well as my Mother and Father and grandparents. As an African American I was faced with living in neighborhoods which was described in the video; low -income and deprived neighborhoods that were filled with factories, poor air quality, and other environmental elements that was detrimental to the health of the people that resided in the communities. There were limited resources to promote healthy living and a healthy diet. The communities were neglected by the government and the people that lived in the areas.

I believe I would be well received by the communities because of my background and the common knowledge of the culture and socio-economic status that was and is present in the low-income neighborhoods of New York City.

I believe the community might be hesitant to the involvement because there have been many people come before with the same promises or intent to make the neighborhoods better and have not presented any or little results. Also, hesitancy may be that I have moved from these areas and have lost my connection with the communities and is unaware about the current situation within the culture and neighborhoods.

It could be very difficult to gain trust with communities that are deprived and a river of constant ideas presented to the communities with a lack of results. However, in order to gain the trust an open forum could be one strategy for introduction and background, as well as to hear the issues that are current in the neighborhoods that are affecting everyone.

Another strategy would be to ask for volunteers to become community leaders; which would help to organize and implement the ideas to make to a better community. There is a need to make the environment better for the present and the future people that reside in these communities.
