Assignment task:
Problem 1: What qualities are especially important to consider in hiring teachers for a child care center? And how can you invite a prospective candidate to demonstrate those qualities during the interview? In this video you will see how a director interviews two prospective teachers. Each candidate is asked to respond to the question, what is wrong with this picture? He or she then demonstrates how a given space, which purposely does not reflect an understanding of early childhood principles, can be improved.
Problem 2: Have you ever observed or taught in an early child care center? If so, you know that the physical environment is a key component of child development and learning. Describe each candidate's response to the question, what is wrong with this picture? What do you think of their responses, based on your understanding of early childhood development?
Problem 3: If you were the director of the center in the video, would you consider hiring one or both candidates, assuming they both have excellent qualifications and references? Why or why not?
