Problem:
Have you ever lived in a different culture or part of the country or known someone from a culture other than where you live now? Do people in that other culture view things differently? How fundamental are these differences? What is one of the characteristics of cultures (cultural universals, etics or cross-cultural specificity, emics), tough and easy, etc.) that you can apply to your observation/experience? And, how can you apply understanding between cultures and differences among individuals within cultures? For a few months, I relocated to the midwest from Oregon, and that was an interesting experience. I was living outside of Cleveland, Ohio, and I was disturbed by the lack of nature and differences in general energy. There's a certain 'chip on the shoulder' unique to the Rust Belt, with little room for sugarcoating, softness, or subtleties. It was considerably harder to find vegetarian fare in cafes and restaurants, and everything exists within a streamlined pace for convenience for the sake of the nation's assembly line. I admittedly was spoiled by the Pacific Northwest, and didn't like it over there. I would argue that the Pacific Northwest maintains more of a collectivist feel to it than the dog-eat-dog individualist feel of the Northern Midwest. However, I certainly recognize that not everyone will be entirely cold, money-driven, and direct to a potential detriment just because they're from the Midwest. Need Assignment Help?
