ESSAY GUIDELINES 2016

You have to write an essay on ONE of the topics. The following represents some guidelines on what to look at in the essays. It is not exhaustive and not the only way in which you could tackle the questions. I am not suggesting that this is the form that the essays must take. It is up to you what you write about and how you structure the essay.

However you are advised to follow the general guidelines on essays already posted on Canvas.

The important thing is to establish a proposition in relation to the topic, and then to bring forward the evidence to argue the point and then bring forward evidence to refute it... and then to arrive at the conclusion. Note that not all answers will take this form. Note that you might be able to arrive at a categorical conclusion.

The introduction should do just that...ie introduce the paper. It should give some background; state the proposition; outline the contents (these become the headings in the paper); and the conclusion. You are being assessed on how well you structure your paper and the argument that you make as well as the content.

Make sure that you also do Harvard System referencing properly. Cite references properly. Ascribe quotes to authors; use " ". Do not commit plagiarism. We have plagiarism detection software. It highlights text that is downloaded from published sources.

You are expected to draw on many sources in writing your paper. There is no one book that will provide the answers to the question you are tackling. The reading list is your starting point; you are expected to do your own research as well. Do ‘Google' searches on the issues.

Please note that following the plan for the essays presented below exactly will not necessarily guarantee you that first class mark. You have to answer the question well. Look at the marking criteria in the Handbook to see what you have to do achieve a first class grade and remember the general advice you have been given on essay writing.
